USMC Communications Equipment
Les Groshong and J.B. Martin write:
Concerning Marine radios -- At the battalion level, up through Saipan, we had no hand held radios. The TBY, a one man back pack, battery operated unit was used at the company level. It was fairly efficient, but usually confined to line of sight operation. Going into Saipan there were 6 TBY's in service. At the battalion headquarters level we had one TBX. powered by a generater. It usually was carried by 4 men- Antennea, generater, transmitter, and reciever. Efficient, but the antennea had a tendency to be seen from a distance, and getting 4 men together after the Tarawa landing proved to be impossible. We had a TCS radio in our communication jeep, and it was great, but it didn't get ashore on Tarawa, and got ashore too soon on Saipan.
More information will be added as more research is done.
