Author, Senior Lecturer in Mathematics Dr James Franklin has recieved great praise for his book The Science of Conjecture. Evidence and Probability before Pascal , published in the United States by the Johns Hopkins University Press. A reviewer from the University of Chicago says of the book: "It is an extraordinary work, a clearly written history of the ideas of evidence and uncertainty before Pascal. Franklin has mastered a vast literature over thousands of years, bringing it together in scholarly fashion, fully annotated." The Wall Street Journal said that this book should be read because of its "contemporary relevance" in our age where the existence of truth is denied by some writers. Such scepticism and irrationalism is refuted by Jim Franklin. Previously, his undergraduate work was at the University of Sydney (1971-75). He completed his PhD in 1981 at Warwick University, on algebraic groups. Since 1981 he has taught in Mathematics at UNSW, with occasional teaching also in Computer Science. Jim is also involved in regular research projects including the use of neural network algorithms for clustering, in explaining how the meaning of words is anchored in perceptual experience. His other research areas include the structuralist philosophy of mathematics and the `formal sciences', Australian Catholic history, the parallel between ethics and mathematics, and the quantification of rights in applied ethics. Published papers of Jim's work are available by clicking on the link to his site below. |
