Place in Jazz History: Coltrane's artistic beauty comes from the fact that he never stopped growing, that he continually searched and explored for every melodic, harmonic and rhythmic possibility in jazz. He was a musical pioneer in every sense of the word, and some of the music he produced just prior to his premature death in 1967, such as Ascension and Interstellar Space, can prove intimidating to the beginning jazz listener. So, for an ideal primer for Coltrane, head back to his early recording days with 1957's Blue Train, which features Trane leading the stellar hard-bop sextet of trumpeter Lee Morgan, trombonist Curtis Fuller, pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer "Philly" Joe Jones. During the five-song set, which includes the timeless title track, you can hear Coltrane probing for new sounds and the potential for the revolutionary albums he would produce later in his career such as Giant Steps (Atlantic, 1959) and A Love Supreme (Impulse, 1964), which would prove messianic for a generation of future jazz musicians striving for musical freedom.
