This text is compiled from factual, statistical, or other information originally from work done and/or owned by Anne McCaffrey. Credit is also given to Dr. Jack Cohen, who developed the theoretical basis for the McCaffrey-Cohen model. Statements expressed herein are ideas that may or may not coincide with those of Anne McCaffrey or Dr. Jack Cohen, and those ideas that have no readily available backing by either of the aforementioned are in no way to be interpreted as direct statements of the views, opinions, and/or statments made by the aforementioned.

And all this means . . .

Based on the genetic patterns asserted in this essay, the following allele combinations emerge:

Queen Bronze Brown Blue Green
XG Xg Rr BB Xg Y Rr Bb XG Y RR BB XG Y RR Bb XG Y rr bb XG Xg RR BB XG XG Rr BB
XG Xg Rr Bb Xg Y Rr bb XG Y Rr BB XG Y rr Bb Xg Y RR bb XG Xg RR Bb XG XG Rr Bb
XG Xg Rr bb   XG Y rr BB XG Y RR bb Xg Y rr bb XG Xg RR bb XG XG Rr bb
Xg Y RR BB XG Y Rr bb Xg Y RR Bb XG XG RR BB Xg Xg RR BB
Xg Y Rr BB XG Y Rr Bb Xg Y rr Bb XG XG RR Bb Xg Xg RR Bb
Xg Y rr BB   XG XG RR bb Xg Xg RR bb
XG Xg rr BB Xg Xg Rr BB
XG Xg rr Bb Xg Xg Rr Bb
XG Xg rr bb Xg Xg Rr bb
XG XG rr BB Xg Xg rr BB
XG XG rr Bb Xg Xg rr Bb
XG XG rr bb Xg Xg rr bb

These combinations are not meant to completely represent the genetic diversity of dragons. The primary intention is to initiate discussion as well as to deal with the issue of gender, rank, and color differences among the dragons on Pern. Based on the genetic combinations above, the theoretical ratio of dragons on Pern would be:

Gold 3/45  6.7 %
Bronze 2/45  4.4 %
Brown 6/45 13.3 %
Blue 10/45 22.2 %
Green 24/45 53.3 %
Total 45/45 99.9 %

Note that golds, based on the theoretical genetic combinations in this essay, are statistically slightly more likely to occur than bronzes. In the Dragonriders of Pern(tm) series, bronzes occur more frequently than golds. Other than this error, the data reflects the patterns found on Pern.

In conclusion, these pages reflect my opinions and suppositions. They are in no way intended to be scientifically accurate. They simply represent my perspective on the very, very theoretical subject of dragon genetics on Pern.

I hope you enjoyed the essay on dracogenetics. If you have any comments or questions, email me.
