The Jem Prototype Fashions- American Beauty Jem

Shown here are the 5 known prototype fashions for the American Beauty Jem doll, slated for release in 1988.  The stock number for the doll is #4007.  The doll and fashion never made it to mass production.  All four versions were supposedly acquired from former Hasbro employees.  It is interesting to compare the different changes the dress went through.

INTERESTING TID-BIT: According to Jem collector, "Bradford206," he says the fabric for the American Beauty dress is  highly flamable! He says former Hasbro workers had to actually change the skirt's fabric to "a royal blue pleather-ish material with a somewhat shiny finish."  So the pleather-like version is what is shown in the catalog, not any of the versions shown here.

AMERICAN BEAUTY #3

The third prototype on the far right was listed on eBay in late October, 2006.

As you can see, the outfit looks alot like version #1.  The only difference is that this one was sold with the boa, AND a hairbow (no tights or bracelets).  The eBay seller says, "all the silver dots are hand applied."  The red trim along the top of the dress is made with a different material from version #1 though.  The stars on the prototype are taped together.  There is also a pin attaching them to the outfit.  The closure on the back is a velcro strip.

The prototype number is:  610118-19M.

This fashion sold for: $355.00.

AMERICAN BEAUTY #4

In January 2007, the fourth, and maybe the last AB prototype was listed on eBay. Although it was listed by a different eBayer, it is an authentic piece.  The seller said, "this [outfit] was obtained directly from a former Hasbro employee."

This version is similar to the others, with its three-tiered blue skirt, but what makes it unique is the armband!  Missing from the piece are the blue and red stars on the bodice.  According to the eBay winner, often designers pulled off the stars to they could use them for another American Beauty prototype!

The prototype number is:  610118-21M.

This fashion sold for: $408.00.

AMERICAN BEAUTY #5

The fifth prototype surprisingly hit eBay in June 2007. The eBay seller was different from the sellers of the previous 4 on this page. He acquired Jem items in an estate sale of a former Hasbro employee. He actually had no knowledge of any of the prototypes he had obtained. He thinks the fashion was used for a production test shot.

This fashion is the most unique of all the "American Beauty" fashions. For starters, the skirt is separated from the bodice, which is more like a leotard. It has the boa, but there is no hairbow or armband.

Lastly, all three pieces have separate prototype numbers.

-Boa: On one side," Star Spangle Boa", on the other side, "610113-03M Jem

-Bodysuit: On one side," American Beauty", on the other side, "610117-06M Jem"

-Skirt: On one side," Beauty Flow Skirt", and on the other, "610117-07M Jem"

This fashion sold for an astonishing: $1009.99.
