| In 1976, 2 of these spacecraft landed on Mars. They operated for years returning weather data and the first pictures from the surface of Mars. Another task they tried to do was to search for life. What they found was puzzling. Initial results showed the Mars soil "ate" the food brought from earth and "breathed". But a closer look at the experiment showed that it may have been just a complex chemical reaction. The 2 landers may have not proven life on Mars but they did prove that Mars is a very interesting place that won't be understood with just two landers. |
