Surveyor was America's unmanned program to land on the moon.  6 of the landers sucessfully landed on the moon and gave basic information that the Apollo program needed to land men on the moon. For example, scientists argued for years that any craft landed on the moon would disappear in "moondust"..  The dust would be so thick an astronaut would be buried in seconds..  This moon quicksand was disproved in 1966 when Surveyor 1 landed and took pictures of its landing pads.
