Monogram 1/32 Apollo CSM
Inspired by the many examples of models seen on the internet, mostly at Ninfinger Productions, I tried my older hand at modeling again. Although trains and science fiction models are much more popular, I really wanted to model real or prototype spacecraft. They also show something that few of us have ever seen or will ever see again and are an interesting part of history to me. I started with some paper models from Space Craft Science Kits. The models are all paper and go together pretty fast. I even downloaded the Cassini model and added a few things to make it more interesting. Chocolate bar wrappers make good foil insulation. I bought a Monogram 1/32 Apollo CSM thinking it would be a good balance of difficulty and detail of the model.. I have handpainted the model and tried to learn by experience some techniques that I had no patience for 15-20 years ago. At the beginning, I did not aim for realism just variety of color, and making sure the pieces fit well. In the end though, I think 1/32 is a bit large for my skills.

The downside of this model is the interior section. RealSpace Models makes a fine Command Module Interior. What was the worst part of the model is now the most detailed even if your painting skills are not the best.

This is an early picture of the base of the command module. The items in the base are painted based on no facts whatsoever. I just picked a color and went with it. The part on the left is the parachute compartment and painted like the pictures on the box.

The silver pieces next to the command module base are the docking mechanism.
Here are the communications antenna, fuel tanks, completed docking probe, thrusters and some astronauts. Also the T shaped abort handle broke off so I made a crude look alike out of toothpicks.

All fit checks are finished and pieces are filed down to fit. I painted the service module aluminium as opposed to steel or silver.

View of the opposite side. The clear parts that come with the model did not fit well and need to be trimmed. They are also scratched so I may just leave them off or paint them. The only thing left is to apply the decals..
