This is the probe that Galileo dropped into Jupiter's atmosphere before entering orbit around the planet.  It was designed to take measurements of the unknown atmosphere of Jupiter.  At the time it entered Jupiter's upper atmosphere it was traveling about 106,000 mile per hour and 4 minutes later it slowed to 250 miles per hour subjecting the probe to a decleration force of about 230 g's.  The probe was designed for this and it survived for about an hour before it was destroyed by the higher pressure of Jupiter's lower atmosphere.  The results it returned helps us learn more about the complexity of Jupiter's atmosphere and our own here on Earth.
