| This part of the moon features the Apennine Mountains, seen here running from the bottom to the right of the frame. Some of the peaks reach 3 miles in height. The Soviets were the first to hit the moon and they did so with Luna 2. Luna 2 smashed into the moon in December 1959. Almost 12 years later, the United States sent Apollo 15 to the mounains and Hadley canyon. 15 landed next to the Hadley Rille that is less than a mile wide and winds around the mountains in the area.
