Andalarn Thran, scion of House Thran is trying to reestablish his family on the island of Adylonis. The Thran House was exiled to the mainland after taking sides against another human house when it attacked the Telmet people 400 years previously. Andalarn is a merchant with a wife and five sons, an unlikely hero who has inherited the family talent: spellsong. Allying himself with a Kel healer named Baliak, he sets out to appeal to the Telmet for help in bringing his House back to its former position.
The rival House Suum and the scheming priestly caste known as the Tialsar are a constant obstruction to this goal. Although the Tialsar are more politically oriented (they play the Houses off against one another for their own advantage), House Suum is a military House that eventually drops all pretense and moves against House Thran as Andalarn seems on the brink of realizing his dream. As a kind of referee between the Houses is a Council of Mages at the city of Moorkai, where the actual seat of power for Adylonis lies.
Whoever the Council recognizes as Ascendant is considered the foremost authority on the island, a position hotly contested between the Houses. Underneath all this is an ongoing uneasiness about a legendary creature called the Diur, whose return would mean the end of everything on the island. Ancient forces, including the last remaining Great Wurm, are convinced that anything, including death, would be preferable to allowing its return.
With House Suum, the Tialsar, and even his own growing ability working against him, can Andalarn bring House Thran back to its former glory?
