Titania appears in many myths and legends prior and during Shakespeare's time. She always plays the role of the Queen of the Fairies, and wife of Oberon, the King of the Fairies. Strong and firm, her character is portrayed fairly the same. She is somewhat like the Merlin of the fairies. In a Midsummer Night's Dream, all three magical characters, Oberon, Puck, and Titania are from other mythological stories so that the audiences could relate to what was happening.

It is also believed that Titania's name could have derived from Greek mythology. Zeus' father and mother (Cronos & Rhea) were of the race of Titans. The Titans were known to be the children of Heaven and Earth. Uranus, the father of Cronos, is comes from the word ouranos, which means "heavens". Another moon of Uranus is named Titania. Together, Titania and Oberon are both moons of Uranus.
