William Adams, son of John and Elizabeth Adams, might describe his life as follows.

Lawrence Redman sold me 104 acres on the north side of the North Anna River in Louisa County 10 January 1742/3 that I sold to Benjamin Timberlake 27 March 1753.

As William Adams of Louisa County, I purchased 180 acres on both sides of the Banister River 19 December 1752, and 300 acres in Cumberland Parish of Lunenburg County 7 March 1753/4. The Cumberland Parish tract was on Wards Fork in present-day Charlotte County and the Banister River tract was across the Staunton River in Halifax County.

My wife died young leaving me to rear at least 6 sons. Since I was just a poor carpenter, I could not afford to educate all the boys, although I could read. I left son George in Louisa County where William Jr. and I witnessed him purchase 200 acres on Owens Creek 21 July 1753. To settle my other sons on their own plantations, I deeded 100 acres of the Wards Fork tract each to William Jr. and James in 1757 and the Banister tract to John in 1760. Another son was Robert who settled near John. My will of 1769 left my last 100 acres, a little furniture, 2 books, and my carpenter tools to Nathan.

Lunenburg County tithe lists reveal that by 1764 William Adams, father and son, each held 100 acres. William Adams, constable of Lunenburg County, held 100 acres in 1764, and another William Adams paid on one tithe and 100 acres in 1764. Nathan named in William's will and James in the 1757 deed are the only two men specifically identified as his sons. That he conveyed land also to William Jr. and John likely places them as sons. George is never identified as a son, but the witness of William Sr. and Jr. to his deed strongly suggests he was. Nathan was surety for the estate of Robert Adams.
