The Tour Du Canada officially starts on Saturday, however 13 of us arrived in Vancouver yesterday to do the "Mile 0" ride. That includes cycling to and from Victoria to get a picture at the mile 0 sign in downtown Victoria. As I write this, I am in an internet cafe in downtown Victoria after an amazing first day of the trip! The weather was awesome and we cycled approximately 40 km from UBC to the Vancouver island ferry terminal.
The ferry trip was a little over an hour but the highlight of the day was definately seeing a pod of killer whales playing really close to the ferry. One even jumped completely out of the water! I do not have my camera cable here now, but I will post pictures asap! From the ferry terminal on Vancouver island, it was about another 40km to our hostel in Victoria. The ride was good, however these guys ride at a pace that is quite a bit faster than what I am used too. That is extremely impressive as over half of the group is retired! The strongest riders are pushing 60 and one of the best is 63 years old! I managed to keep up without too much trouble and we'll have to wait and see how the legs will react in the morning!
That's all for now, pictures will be posted soon. Tomorrow morning we meet at the mile 0 sign at 8:00am and then trek back to Vancouver. British Columbia is beautiful and the forecast is good for our ride to Merritt next week... Anyways, this summer is going to be deadly!
