Well, today was an absolute breeze! Only 65 km from Golden, BC to Field, BC. We had a fair bit of climbing to get out of Golden, BC but it was a joke from there. This west side of the Canadian Rocky Mountains is beautiful and my legs felt great! Unfortunately, I forgot to charge my camera battery so I do not have any pictures today.
I left camp late today, as usual, and I rode with Iona and her Ironman friend Darren from Calgary. Not much excitement happened during the ride except that I got my second flat tire with just 10 km to go. I believe it is in the same location as the first one and I patched the tire puncture and rotated them. If I continue to have tire issues, I'll need to invest in some heavy duty touring ones. I have been fortunate with these blowouts because they all happened while I was on level terrain. I'd hate to rupture one while descending the mountains!
It was my turn for galley duty today and we made a vegetable/chicken stir-fry. I am actually learning more about cooking this trip that I am about cycling, but it's a good skill to have. The evening turned out to be a disaster! Just 10 km past our kicking horse campground lies Canada's highest waterfalls, called the Takakkaw Falls. Most everyone else in the group made the climb to the falls this afternoon. Due to my bike troubles and lack of a camera battery, I decided that I'd go around 8:30 pm and try to catch the falls at sunset. Well, that was a good plan in theory! Just as I was about to pull out of camp, the skies opened up and unleashed the most severe thunder storm that I ever witnessed. We all scrambled to get our stuff inside but to no avail. Poor Bob Mac got stuck at the top of the falls in the rain but luckily, he's hitched a ride back down with some friendly tourists.
At last, the rain subsided enough for me to get into the tent and write this journal. I really cannot complain about the weather because we have had nothing but sunshine since June 20th. That's all for now, gotta go to Alberta in the morning!
