Day 11 - July 3, 2006

Rest Day in Golden, BC

Distance: 0 km

Today was our second rest day, indicating our completion of segment 2 of 13. This last stretch from Merritt, BC to Golden, BC flew by quickly. Amazing weather and beautiful scenery made the past four days really enjoyable and I am thankful that I did not crash or suffer any other annoying events. My body is becoming accustomed to the daily ass-kicking and has responded nicely. I do not doubt it for one second that I will cross this continent. I attribute a large part of my enjoyment thus far to the amazing people in our group. I have been laughing non-stop since day one and I think that everyone draws strength from one another. In hindsight, I cannot imagine undertaking this ordeal alone.

I slept in for the first time today since leaving Newfoundland and it felt awesome. Everybody else got up to enjoy pancakes compliments of Bob Williams but I remained in my tent until 10:00am. After a shower and some oatmeal, I made it to a small internet cafe in downtown Golden, BC to update my site, respond to emails, and do some banking. It was a royal pain in the ass. I ended up spending the entire afternoon there because I had to switch websites. Basically, if too many people access my site during the same time frame it will shutdown for an hour and an "exceeded allocated data transfer" error will occur. I think that I have fixed this problem by buying my new site (www.geocities.com/jamiehorwood) but if it happens again, just try back later that day.

After the ordeal at the internet cafe, I did some laundry and went to the trapper's pub with our driver Mike. We just watched some of the stage 3 highlights of the Tour Du France, played pool, and had a few pitchers.

The pub was a great way to wind down the rest day and I am about to try and go to sleep. I suspect that maybe a problem because there is a damn railroad adjacent to our campsite. Tomorrow, we have a very short ride to Field, BC, our last stop in British Columbia.
