Day 1 - June 23, 2006

Orientation in Vancouver, BC

Distance: 40 km

Today was officially the first day of the Tour Du Canada. However, the only thing on the agenda is was a 8 hour orientation to the trip. We met the rest of the group and divided up into galley crews. I am a crew chief and my galley team consist of Emily from Calgary and Gary from Edmonton.

Just as my luck would have it, all the crew chiefs were responsible for supper. We cooked pasta and salad and everyone seemed to enjoy it, considering it was our first night cooking from the truck. After supper, I cycled to Stanley Park with Bob Mac and Iona. We were late leaving but it was definitely worth it! We saw the Vancouver skyline and cycled along the Vancouver beach as the sun was coming down. As the pictures below illustrate, the skyline is unlike any other in Canada. The beach over looked the Pacific Ocean and at 8:30 on Friday night, it was full of hundreds of people. It was seriously like a scene from California! The three of us had some awesome ice cream and made it back to UBC just before sunset for a total of 40km's on our "rest day." Tomorrow, we head to Mission, BC in our first trip east!
