Zoetrope refers to the internet site maintained by Zoetrope Studios, Francis Ford Coppola's independent studio. As a part of the site, there are workshop sections where writers can discuss & critique each others work; in addition to the short story & screenplay sections, which are ostensibly for aspiring professionals, there is a poetry site, which is decidedly for amateurs (I mean no derogation there; I mean folks who write poetry for the love of it). For a time I worked with some of the folks in the poetry section. I submitted several dozen poems, reviewed about 10% of the thousand or more poems I read on the site, and occasionally enjoyed productive & interesting correspondence with several of the members. Over the last months of the year 2001, the folks whose works & words & personalities I enjoyed most started hanging around less frequently & posted fewer pieces. Then, on September 12th, some idiot posted a review of Where Nothing Ever Happens, that basically amounted to "You've achieved a good likeness, but it is 'Art?'" Said idiot was at this time-- right after September 11th, with the world hurling about my head-- posting these long, simplistic, I-Know-The-Perfect-Way-To-Live-Life pieces. Shortly thereafter I quit. It was fun while it lasted.
