"Neidpath Castle"

Neidpath Castle lies on the A72 one mile outside Peebles in Scotland
NEIDPATH- Peebles; nice tower house; the interior space was so huge and the walls so thick, that they were able to carve out lots of separate rooms, nooks, and crannies, in a way that no longer makes any sense now that the place is not lived in and the functions are not obvious any more; one whole wing of the place fell down at an early period and they never rebuilt it, just put some balconies and privies on it; these people were serendipitous and just did whatever came into their heads at the time.

The Ghost of Neidpath Castle is said to be Jean Douglas, the reputed Maid of Neidpath who was born in 1705, The younger of three sisters. She fell in love with the son of the Laird of Tushielaw, When marraige was mentioned, he was sent away, as he was considered below her station in life. Jane however, remained true to her lover and kept watch for his return from the look out post above the castle gate. The powers that be relented and her lover was recalled. Unfortunately as he passed the castle he failed to recognise her and Jean subsequently died of a broken heart. Both sir Walter Scott and T. Cambell were moved enough to write poems about the maid of neidpath. Her ghost has been observed within the castle and descriptions give her long, black hair and a brown dress with a large white collar or ruff. She obviously objects to merriment People having fun, or being merry within the castle and shows her displeasure by banging doors, her last tantrum lasted three days. She has the ability to pass through whole objects while at the same time obscuring others. Jean has been seen in the courtyard, along the cherry tree walk, in the laigh hall and her shadow on the eastern walkway. 1
