The Persian wedding ceremony is a longstanding cultural tradition that is called the "Aghd", which means "contract" in Arabic. The dry and serious nature of the word is meant to emphasize the belief that marriage is a solid and permanent commitment between both the wedding couple and their respective families.

In contrast to the legal sounding term, the ceremony itself is beautiful and rich with cultural traditions that have evolved over thousands of years in a culture that has maintained much of its distinct and unique character. Most of the traditional props, rituals, and symbolism of the Aghd are echoes of ancient beliefs that were in practice long before the introduction of Islam. As the Aghd evolved and changed over time, other parts of the ceremony have been dropped altogether, ensuring that each Aghd is unique and personal in its expression.
