Rats can be taught to do tricks easily. They are clean and will tidy up their cage as well as they can. Rats are not solitary and will happily be in groups, just make sure that males know each other from a fairly young age. They live longer than Hamsters. They can learn to go to sleep at a certain time, so you can control their bedtime. They are very friendly to humans.
They can require a big cage, which can cost lots of money and can take a while to clean out. If you wish to get your rat a ball to roll in, you may need to look around a bit. When breeding, you may get a fault in the gene, such as baby rats with no feet.
Hamsters have a wide variety of toys that can be brought from shops. There is a big range of colours to choose from.
Hamsters are nocturnal, meaning they sleep in the day. They are solitary, meaning hamsters prefer to alone, except during breeding and birth. If you smell of food, or the hamster is not used to you, they may bite you. Hamsters have a stump tail, so they lack balance for tricks and gripping.

Before you say 'But Rats spread the Plague!' so did people! Rats were mere sufferers of the disease, like us. People spread the disease by trade and trips abroad.
