His parents were Samuel & Jane Britt Cowan. He lost a leg in the Civil War.


Hugh McIlhenny McCelvey

Bought a portion of his father's estate after he died. Eventually, he moved from Houston Co (Pennington) to Temple TX where he and his sons amassed a fortune in the mercantile and real estate business.

James Warren "Jim" Wideman M.D.

Practiced medicine at Due West SC for 38 years..he had practiced 7 years before relocating to Due West. He served the South in the Civil War.
He graduated from Charleston Medical School, taking first honors, in 1873, wiht the privilege of being interned at Hospital of Charleston.


851. Mary Jane Wideman

Mary Jane graduated from Due West Female College, SC (a part of Erskine College). They had 8 children, all of whom graduated from Erskine (boys) or Due West Female College (girls).


852. Samuel Adams Wideman M.D.

He graudated from Charleston Medical School. He was buried in the Wideman plot at the Due West ARP Church cemetery, Due West SC. This family had three children, one daughter and two sons. He practiced at Leslie, Woodruff, Townville, Spartanburg, all in SC.


853. Margaret Statia Wideman

Graduated from Due West Female College, tied for first honors. She taught school about 12 years. No children lived to maturity.
Lived their latter life in Gastonia NC. Place of birth was called "Trickem" at the time of her birth.

Graduated from Due West Women's College; also studied at Winthrop College, State College of Chicago, Columbia Univ and Correspondence Dept of Clark Univ. She taught in Anderson, Greenville, Spartanburg and Furman. She was head of English Dept of Miss. Snyodical College, 2 years Lady Principal at Linwood College (Gastonia NC) and was head of English Dept of Flora McDonald College in Red Springs NC. Frances never married. Frances is one of 7 who helped put together this information from Jordan-Ansley Bible.


856. James Warren Wideman Jr.

Graduated from Erskine College, Due West SC; also Law School of U of SC, Columbia SC. He practiced law in Abbeville and Manning SC; also, in Miami FL and was a Federal Attorney in IRS Washington DC in 1932. He was a senator from Claredon Co SC.


411. John Augustus Ansley

Served in 2nd Texas Calvary "Pryor's" with bro-in-law, Wm P. McHenry. He is referred to as "Captain" John A. Ansley. He later moved to Prescott AR where he ran a newspaper. Later this family migrated to Portland OR where he was employed by the Portland Oregon paper (a Hearst paper).


Elizabeth Ann "Lizzie" McCelvey

Lizzie and husband established the "Ansley Place", a part of her father's estate after they married..her sister (& husband, Wm. P. McHenry) lived in their father's home.
