Gilbert Strayhorn and Margaret Roan

*Gilbert Strayhorn - Born abt. 1715 in Dauphin County Pa.  Gilbert Died 6 Feb 1803 in Orange Co. NC.  Gilbert changed his name from Strain to Strayhorn about 1742.  The reason for changing name is not known.  Gilbert is listed in the Orange Co. Tax records in 1779.  Gilbert was also listed in the 1790 and 1800 census in Orange Co. NC he is shown with 8 slaves in the 1800 census.  Gilbert Married Margaret Roan (d. Aft 1800) abt 1740.  Gilbert and Margaret had  8 children. 

John - Born 3 Aug 1742 in Hawfield Orange Co NC. Died 1826 in Orange NC.  John was a Revolutionary War Soldier and also fought in the French and Indian War.  He served under Morgan at the battle of Cowpen; also he was in the battles of Hillsboro, Cane Brake and Kings Mtn. SC.  He appears in the Orange Co tax record list in 1779.  John married Elizabeth Johnson.  The year and location are unknown.  John and Elizabeth had 13 children.

Notes on John Strayhorn: John Strayhorn, N.C. - File No. S-7655 Application dated 25 May 1842, Orange Co., NC.  John Strayhorn, a resident of New Hope, Orange Co.,  NC, aged 87.  Volunteered for the militia about 1 July 1781.  Was born in Orange Co. 3 Aug 1754. Depositions of James Riggs, 24 May 1842, aged 82, a pensioner.  Re:service of John Strayhorn.  And of  Alexander Gattis, 10 May 1842, aged 81; also of Aaron Hunter, 23 May 182, of Staly, NC, Orange Co.,  Who stated that John Strayhorn served with his wagon & horses.  John Strayhorn died June 2, 1843, leaving  children (not named).  Served under Cols. Farmer & Capt.. Abraham Allen, Richards, & Perill.  Several of the  documents were sworn to before Samuel Strayhorn, Justice of the peace.

*Sarah - Born in 1746  in Hawfield Orange Co NC. Died 1826 in Orange NC. Sarah married  William Ansley abt. 1770. Sarah and William had 10 Children. ( see William Ansley and Sarah Strayhorn)

James - Born *** Died in 1833. James was listed in the 1790 census owning 222 acres.  He was also an Elder in the New Hope Presby Church in 1820.  He served in the Revolutionary War.  James married Rachael Cabe .  The year and location are unknown.  James and Rachael had 5 children.

Mary - Born abt. 1754 in Hawfield Orange Co NC. Died 1826 in Orange NC. Died Unknown. Mary married John Cabe 15 Feb 1786 in Alexander Borland .  It is not known if Rachael Cabe and John Cabe were brother and sister.  Mary and John had 9 children.

Mirian - Born **** in Orange Co NC.  Died May 1830 Mirian married John Strain.  They had 9 children.

Major William - Born  abt 1756 in Orange Co NC.  Died 17 May 1834 In Orange Co NC.  Major Williams served as a private in the Revolutionary war with the North Carolina Militia.   He is also listed in 1779 Orange Co. Tax records.  Major William married Mary Hunter 6 Dec 1788 in Orange Co NC. They had 10 children.  Major William married Mary “Polly” Tate (b. Orange Co NC. D. July 1821 NC) they had 10 children.

William Strayhorn, N.C. - File No. - S-7650 Application dated 30 Aug. 1832, Orange Co., NC.  William Strayhorn, aged76.  He entered the army of the  Revolution under Capt. James Carringtonin 1777 or 1778 as a substitute for his brother John Strayhorn who  had been drafted. (Details of service given.)  Deposition of John Strayhorn& James Hart re: soldier.  William  Strayhorn born in Orange Co., In1756, as his brother John was born 1754 & he always understood he was two years younger than John; born about four miles from Hillsboro.  1833 deposition of Alexander Gattis, a  soldier of the revolution, aged 72;knew William Strayhorn as a private under Capt. Allen.  No family data given.

Nancy - Born abt 1756 ****.  Died  *****.  Married James Hart had 11 children.

David - Born ******. Died 1824 in Maury Tenn.  David married Catherine McCabe (b.** D. Oct 1795) 9 Oct 1790. David and Catherine had 1 Child.  David married  Penelope Berry (b.** D. 1848 Maury Tenn.)  9 Oct 1795.  William Ansley was the bondsman for the marriage between David and Penelope.  David and Penelope had 5 children.
