X-Files Returning to FOX Network
Reuters, 16th May 2001

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - At least one mystery about ``The X-Files'' has been solved. The Fox television thriller will definitely be back next season, a network spokesman said on Wednesday.
After a repeat of last year's down-to-the-wire negotiations with ``X-Files'' creator-producer Chris Carter about the show's future, Fox has locked in the series for a ninth season as part of the network's upcoming fall schedule.
``The X-Files will be on the schedule that we're announcing (Thursday)'' at the network's upfront presentation to advertisers in New York, the spokesman said. He added that ``X-Files'' star David Duchovny, whose role as the alien-hunting, conspiracy-minded FBI agent Fox Mulder was scaled back this season, will not return, except for the possibility of a cameo appearance here and there. In addition, ``The X-Files'' spinoff series ``The Lone Gunman,'' which debuted earlier this year, will not be renewed, the spokesman said.
Media reports earlier Wednesday said 11th-hour discussions with Carter had left the fate of ``The X-Files'' in doubt. Last year, the network obtained a commitment to bring the show back for an eighth season only after lengthy negotiations with both Carter and Duchovny, who had sought to diminish his involvement with the show.
The X-Files'' debuted in 1993, centering on special agents Mulder, a believer in the paranormal, and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), a medical doctor and skeptic, as they probed unsolved FBI cases involving UFO sightings, telepaths and mutants while hidden forces seemed to impede their work. This season, actor Robert Patrick joined the cast as Scully's new partner, agent John Doggett. The season finale, airing Sunday, is expected to reveal details about Scully's mysterious pregnancy as Mulder and Doggett race against time to protect Scully and her unborn child from unknown pursuers.

FOX Brings back The X-Files
E!Online, 16th May 2001

The truth is finally out there (albeit just under the deadline): Fox has held onto The X-Files for another season.
Just one day before the network was set to announce its 2001-02 fall lineup--purportedly with or without its long-running sci-fi hit--Fox has secured a deal with creator Chris Carter to keep the show going for a ninth season.
Carter's X-Files spinoff, The Lone Gunmen, wasn't so lucky--the comedy won't be back next fall after a poorly rated midseason run, Reuters reports.
Representatives for Fox would not provide any specifics Wednesday, saying the fall lineup wouldn't be announced until Thursday. But the advance word certainly answers some burning programming questions, after Fox reportedly prepared three different fall schedules--one with and two without its sci-fi staple.
For each of the past two seasons, one of the biggest mysteries surrounding The X-Files was whether it would be on Fox's schedule at all. Last May, negotiations also went down to the wire, but Carter ultimately signed on for another season, and costar David Duchovny, who had waged a nasty legal battle over his residuals from the show, agreed to appear in a handful of episodes.
Next season, Duchovny will probably only appear in an occasional cameo, the Fox spokesman told Reuters. With Duchovny's sporadic appearances this season, Gillian Anderson's character Dana Scully has found a new partner in Robert Patrick, who plays straight-laced G-man John Doggett.
The show's season finale airs Sunday, with Scully and Doggett racing to protect Scully's unborn child. Anderson signed a deal last July locking her into The X-Files for at least one more season.
Still, the X-Files mystery was said to be the final piece in Fox's fall lineup--a schedule that reportedly will include three new sitcoms and two new dramas. If The X-Files hadn't come back for a ninth season, Fox was prepared to replace it on Sunday night with either Boston Public or the new drama, 24, Daily Variety reports.
But as it turns out, X-Philes won't need to concern themselves with those conspiracy theories.

FOX's sitcom-heavy slate hinges on The X-Files
Reuters, 16th May 2001
Fox execs are in a scheduling holding pattern, however, until the network works out a deal with producer Chris Carter to return with another season of ``The X-Files '' The network has at least three different schedules in the works -- one with ``X-Files'' back on Sundays, and the other two sans the sci-fi drama.
Fox is expected to make an 11th-hour deal with Carter to either return to ``X-Files'' or serve as a consultant. But in the unlikely event that ``X-Files'' signs off, Fox is mulling placing either new drama ``24'' or returning David E. Kelley series ``Boston Public'' in the slot

FOX's version of 'Once and Again'
The Washinton Post, 17th May 2001
Fox announced today that reruns are a part of its fall season-launch plans. This is the brave new world of broadcast TV, network execs said. Get used to it.
The network unveiled a prime-time slate that includes five new series, three nights returned intact, "Temptation Island" moved to Thursdays, a Duchovny-less "X-Files" -- and that 8 p.m. Wednesday rerun block. They're calling it the Fox Family Comedy Wheel and it will include "best of" Fox "classics" from "The Simpsons," "Malcolm in the Middle" and "That '70s Show."

Nothing changes on Sundays except that David Duchovny won't be back on "The X-Files." Which, come to think of it, isn't really much of a change, since this season viewers were promised he would appear in a number of episodes but he merely breezed through them in one scene. Gillian Anderson, Grushow says, is contractually obligated to appear in every episode. Asked whether the word "appear" was being used in the Duchovny sense, Grushow said Duchovny's contract this season required him to appear in five episodes "significantly" and do cameos in six more, which "in no way, shape or form represents the deal we have with Gillian."
Fox still doesn't know whether "X-Files" creator Chris Carter will return, though if he doesn't, he will have a consulting position in the production. Grushow said Carter is still making that "lifestyle" choice of whether "he wants to leave the office at midnight or 3 a.m."
Should Carter not stay on, 20th Century Fox would likely elevate Frank Spotnitz and Vince Gilligan to showrunners, insiders said.
