| feature films Evolution (2001) ? Ira Kane The comedy follows the chaos that ensues when a meteor hits the earth carrying alien life forms that give new meaning to the term "survival of the fittest." David Duchovny, Orlando Jones, Seann William Scott, and Julianne Moore star as the only people standing between the aliens and world domination?which could be bad news for the earth. The X-Files (1998) ? Special Agent Fox Mulder After surviving the bombing of a federal building in Texas, Mulder and Scully defy orders and go in search of a new lead about aliens on earth and the question of who's running what. Also starring Gillian Anderson, John Neville, and William B. Davis Playing God (1997) ? Eugene Sands David Duchovny plays a doctor whose fall from professional grace leads to a dangerous career in the criminal underworld. Also starring Timothy Hutton and Angelina Jolie Kalifornia (1993) ? Brian Kessler Offbeat road-movie thriller about a writer and a photographer, researching a coffee-table book on serial killers, who get a harsh dose of reality when they hook up with Pitt and Lewis. Also starring Brad Pitt, Juliette Lewis, and Michelle Forbes Ruby (1992) ? Officer Tippit OK speculation about the life and motives of lowlife Jack Ruby, the mob errand boy, FBI informant, and nightclub owner who killed JFK assassin Lee Harvey Oswald. Also starring Frank Orsatti, Sherilyn Fenn, and Jeffrey Nordling Beethoven (1992) ? Brad Innocuous family comedy about an uptight Dad (Grodin) whose family talks him into keeping a runaway puppy that grows into a big, slobbering St. Bernard. It's fun to watch all-American, clean-cut Jones playing a slimy, raspy-voiced villain here. Also starring Charles Grodin, Bonnie Hunt, and Dean Jones Chaplin (1992) ? Rollie Totheroh Reverent, lovingly detailed bio of Charlie Chaplin ? from his squalid childhood in London to early moviemaking days with Mack Sennett, to international stardom, celebrity, and scandal. Also starring Robert Downey, Jr., Geraldine Chaplin, and Paul Rhys Venice/Venice (1992) ? Dylan Jaglom pretentiously parodies himself, playing a "maverick" American filmmaker at the Venice Film Festival; Alard is cast as a French journalist who becomes involved with him. Annoyingly self-absorbed, but occasionally effective when depicting the artificial emotion at the festival. Also starring Nelly Alard, Suzanne Bertish, and Henry Jaglom Julia Has Two Lovers (1991) ? Daniel Vivacious young Julia is a girl with a dilemma. Marry her boring, but reliable, live-in lover Jack ? or play the field and hope for more passionate companionship. Just as Jack demands that she make up her mind, Julia answers the phone. And what begins as an innocent wrong number quickly blossoms into something much more...stimulating. Also starring Daphna Kastner and David Charles not available on video Denial (1991) ? John Muddled, incoherent story of a woman obsessed with the memory of her lost, brooding lover. Flashbacks are virtually indistinguishable from the present-day narrative! This went straight to video. Also starring Robin Wright and Jason Patric Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead (1991) ? Bruce Superficial comedy about kids whose babysitter dies, leaving them to get along without supervision or money. The core of the film is not as bad as the title might suggest. Also starring Christina Applegate, Joanna Cassidy, and John Getz The Rapture (1991) ? Randy Beautiful, hedonistic young woman with droning, dead-end job opts for super-Fundamentalist religious fanaticism. Singular drama about one woman's literal ascension to heaven features swinging group sex, one genuinely shocking maternal act, and a straight-faced cameo by at least one Horseman of the Apocalypse. Also starring Mimi Rogers Bad Influence (1990) ? Club Goer Spader befriends Lowe after the latter gets him out of a tense barroom confrontation, then finds this psychopathic leech calling the shots in his romantic ? and professional ? life. Slick, high-tech variation on STRANGERS ON A TRAIN knows which buttons to push. Also starring Rob Lowe and James Spader New Year's Day (1989) ? Billy Another personal, hit-and-miss film from Jaglom, who plays a writer attempting to reclaim the N.Y.C. apartment he's sublet to Jakobson, Winter, and Welles. Typically, there is much talk about relationships and sex (among other subjects); some of it illuminating, much of it pretentious. Also starring Maggie Wheeler and Henry Jaglom Working Girl (1988) ? Tess' Birthday Party Friend Cute comedy about a naive but ambitious secretary who tries to outfox her wily boss by closing a big deal ? with the help of a man she just happens to fall in love with. Also starring Harrison Ford, Sigourney Weaver, and Melanie Griffith |
