The rats evolved in the highly magical environment of the garbage heaps behind the Unseen University. They can talk, think, and cause a whole plague of rats with only about 200 of them around. They are accompanied by a stupid looking kid and a talking cat named Maurice. Together they roam the towns of the main continent and earn their money by creating a plague of rats in a town, and then having the stupid looking kid play his pipe to lead them away for money. That trick worked very well until they got to the town of Bad Blintz.

Ok, talk to you
Genua, XXXX, Klatch, Tsort, Ankh-Morpork, Bad Blintz

Calling out around the world
Are you ready for a brand new beat
Summer's here and the time is right
For dancing in the streets
They're dancing in Ankh-Morpork
Down in Genua
In Pseudopolis

All we need is music, sweet music
There'll be music everywhere
They'll be swinging, swaying, dishes breaking,
Dancing in the street, oh

It doesn't matter what you wear, just as long as you are there
So come on, every rat, grab a girl, everywhere, around the world
They'll be dancing, dancing in the street

It's an invitation across the nation, a chance for folks to screem
They'll be laughing and singing, music swinging
Dancing in the street

Djelibeybi,
Ephebe on the circle sea now
Don't forget Sto Helit
On the streets of Quirm
Back in Uberwald
No Matter where they are

All we need is music, sweet music
There'll be music everywhere
They'll be swinging, swaying, dishes breaking,
Dancing in the street, oh

It doesn't matter what you wear, just as long as you are there
So come on, every rat, grab a girl, everywhere, around the world
They'll be dancing, dancing in the street

Way down in Holy Wood, everyday
Dancing in the streets
Cross in the Aurient too
Me and you
Dancing in the street

Don't you know
They'll be dancing
Dancing in the street (repeat)

The Educated Rodents

They appear in one book:

The theme dedicated to the rats is Dancing In The Streets by Mick Gager and David Bowie, as amended slightly by me:
