DRAUGHTS (or Checkers)

The game of Draughts is played on a standard Chess board of 64 black and white chequered squares. Each player has 12 pieces normally in the form of fat round counters. Each player's pieces are placed on the 12 black squares nearest to that player. The white squares are not used at all in the game - the pieces only move diagonally and so always stay on the black squares. Black always plays first.

The objective of the game is to take all of the opponent's pieces or to produce a position such that the opponent is unable to move.

Players take turns to move their pieces forwards only. A player can move only one piece each turn and only one square at a time. When two opposite pieces are face to face you can capture the opponent's piece by jumping over it as long as there is an empty square behind it on which to land. You can make more than one jump at a time. Each captured piece is removed from the board. If a capturing move is available it must be taken. If two capturing moves are available the player must decide which to take.

A piece that makes it to the other end of the board is crowned and becomes a King piece. You crown a piece by placing one of your pieces that has been removed on top of it. King pieces can move in forward and backward directions.

The game is won by the player who first manages to take all his opponent's pieces or renders them unable to move.
