In the absence of a magistrate a group of respected and impartial citizens may be used instead. For minor crimes, fines, removal of privileges, and wearing of signs are common punishments. For more serious crimes imprisonment, branding, banishment, death, and being put in a state prolonged sleep are acceptable, depending on the circumstances and magistrate's decision. On rare occasion the ruling princess has overturned magistrate decisions, but it is a very uncommon occurrence.
