The Wallflowers
Wallflowers - "Red Letter Days" SACD (Kazaamies = 4 of 5)

Jakob Dylan and crew return on their fourth album, leading the horse toward more adult-alternative rock and roll.  Although this album achcheived less commercial success than their earlier mega-hit album, "Bringing Down the Horse", the songs here are still consistently good.  The overall sound is similar, too, which is that of tightly produced rock and roll---as opposed to a more "raw" sound.  Moreover, the surround sound is excellent.  It's not too little.  It's not too much.  I'd say it's just about right.  Specifically, the mix focuses on Dylan's vocals.  The vocals are front and center, to be sure; but they are also the primary thing you hear emmanating from the surround speakers.  For instance, one moment the vocals will be mostly up front.  Then the next they will be doubled into the rears for added emphasis.  It's a technique that stays true to the overall Wallflowers sound (in which vocals are more prominent than instrumentation).  Perhaps the mix could've been made better by opening up some of the instrumentation, such as is actually done to a fair degree on the song, "Three Ways".  However, that would be less true to the original.  It's a hybrid disc.  So if you like good rock and roll, you should go and get it!
