Simple Minds - "New Gold Dream" DVD-Audio (Kazaamies = 4 of 5)
Don't confuse this with the SACD version. What I have in my hands is a DVD-Audio version, and it's completely different. Most notably, the DVD-Audio has a surround mix whereas the SACD does not. Anyway... This is my first experience listening to Simple Minds. (Outside of the mega-hit single "Don't You Forget About Me", of course, that was featured in the 1985 movie "The Breakfast Club".) However, that particular song isn't found here. Instead, we are treated to some great alternative pop/rock songs from prior to that mainstream breakthrough. The tunes here remind me of early U2 before they became increasingly oriented toward stadium rock. So how is the sound quality? The surround tracks are encoded at 96 kHz / 24-Bits and it sounds pretty darn good. There is a pleasant warmth to it. And the surround mix, for the most part, does a decent job of keeping things interesting in the rear without overpowering the front. Vocals, thankfully, are spread across the front channels. So I'm happy. It's a good disc to own. Too bad it isn't yet available in the United States**. (It was supposed to be.) Canada and pretty much the rest of the world have it, though. So maybe someday.
**Edit: This album has finally received US release, too!" |
