RPWL - World Through My Eyes SACD (Kazaamies = 3-1/2 of 5)
Do they still release multi-channel pop/rock Super Audio CDs in the year 2005? They sure do, however, it is getting harder to find. In the case of "World Through My Eyes" that will likely mean looking overseas if you're a resident of Canada or the United States. RPWL is a progressive rock band out of Germany and their influences include Pink Floyd and the Beatles among others. Interestingly, "Start The Fire", which is a rather pop-sounding tune, could easily be mistaken for Porcupine Tree. About half the songs are in excess of seven minutes, though, so much of the album stays prog-oriented. Fidelity-wise, the audio on this recording is merely fair. The surround mix, however, makes up for some of the lackluster sonics. It's active enough in the rears to keep things interesting. Although, to be honest, they're not nearly as active or experimental sounding as one might have expected considering some of the band's influences. Vocals are spread across the front three channels. However, there is a slight emphasis on the center channel, which I could do without. These things said, and considering the limited selection of new releases, I guess I'm fairly happy to own this disc. |
