R.E.M. - "In Time: The Best of R.E.M. 1988-2003
" DVD-Audio (Kazaamies = 3-1/2 of 5)
It's pretty darn good, I think. Originally released as a standalone DVD-Audio title, it was later released (as were most of REM's post-indie output) as a 2-disc CD+DVD-Audio title.
Elliot Schiener did most of the surround mixes and I am quite pleased. I was a little worried that the surrounds would sound gimmicky, but that is not the case at all. Still, you won't mistake this disc for 2-channel. The surround mix is well done, indeed, which mostly makes up for the otherwise lackluster and compressed sound production.
The bonus video is for "Bad Day" and it is pretty cool. (It's the one where REM do that CNN/FoxNews/MSNBC style of newscast.)
Not so surprisingly, yet somewhat disappointingly, the song "Shiney Happy People" is no where to be found. I guess the guys must really hate that one? Four of the 18 tracks are from Automatic For The People", which is often regarded as their best album of the Nineties; but most everything is represented, nonetheless. I would've liked to have seen "Bang & Blame", "Lotus", or "Bittersweet Me" included instead of "All The Right Friends" from the Vanilla Sky soundtrack. On the other hand, I am quite thrilled to see the includion of "The Great Beyond" from the Man On The Moon soundtrack.
It seems like the perfect DVD-Audio to get for the REM fan who only wants to buy just one hi-res disc of theirs. |
