"The Marvin Gaye Collection" SACD or DVD-Audio (Kazaamies = 3.75 of 5)
This is essentially a greatest hits album with titles taken from Gaye's Motown years. For this review, I used the Super Audio CD multi-channel tracks. Sonically, the recording sounds a bit soft; but it is still detailed enough to be acceptable. The mix spreads lead vocals across the front left/center/right channels at a more-or-less even volume level. The surround channels contain mostly background vocals, strings, horns, and light percussion. They are aggressive and quite discrete; it's not one of those mixes where the surrounds blend seamlessly into the mains. However, I don't feel it sounds "gimmicky" at all---a subjective thing, I realize. Overall, I recommend this disc. |
