James Taylor - "Hourglass" SACD (Kazaamies = 4 of 5)
This album from 1997 shows a rejuvinated James Taylor with great songs such as "Line 'Em Up" that helped land him a Grammy. The surround mix was created by Frank Filipetti and, in my opinion, it's pretty darn good. Taylor's vocals are placed mostly into the center channel whilst background vocals and instrumentation appear elsewhere. Normally, I prefer vocals to be created using a phantom image via the main left/right speakers and using the center speaker to help solidify the image. However, with intimate material from singers such as James Taylor, it appears this method works quite well---provided your center speaker isn't sitting too high or too low. There's plenty of room-filling surround action. I like it!
Note: This is a single-layer disc; so it doesn't have any CD compatibility. |
