Graham Nash
           Graham Nash - "Songs For Survivors"  DVD-Audio  (Kazaamies = 4 of 5)

Having once been a member of The Hollies, Graham Nash is probably best known for his association with that 1960s singing group---Crosby, Stills, Nash, (and sometimes Young).  On this solo album from 2002, we find Nash is still accompanied by musical buddies David Crosby on some background vocals and long-time drummer Russ Kunkel.

The surround mix was done by Russ's son, Nathaniel Kunkel, whose work I respect and enjoy.  There's plenty of good stuff going on in the surrounds to make the disc worthwhile, yet it doesn't go overboard.  Vocals are spread across the front three speakers, with an emphasis on the center channel; and, occassionally, the vocals are doubled up into the surrounds---all techniques employed by Kunkel on some of his other surround mixes.  I'm not a huge fan of emphasizing vocals into the center channel, but Kunkel's mixes ususally work out fine, especially with more intimate singer/songer type of material, such as this---and "Songs For Survivors" is no exception.

The songs, themsevles, are decent enough and somewhat catchy.  However, nothing is particularly ground-breaking.  That said, their overall presentation on this disc given the surround treatment is pretty darn good.
