The Donnas
       The Donnas - "Gold Medal"  DualDisc w/DVD-Audio  (Kazaamies = 2-1/2 of 5)

Released as one of the first DualDisc titles (with CD on one side and DVD on the other side), this title was quickly pulled from store shelves when it was discovered that the last song on the CD side was cut short.  The DVD side is fine, though.  It contains true DVD-Audio recorded at 96 kHz / 24-Bits for both the surround tracklisting and the stereo tracklisting.  The surround mix by Chris Lord-Alge isn't terribly impressive, but at times I find it to be serviceable.  Vocals stay firmly up front and locked almost exclusively into the center channel (a technique bitterly I dislike).  Surrounds channels, meanwhile, are primarily used for light percussion and doubled guitar.  The only time things get fancy is when, for the start of the song "Don't Break Me Down", Lord-Alge puts a single bass riff in the center channel whilst the other channels remain silent until the rest of the band explodes from the remaining speakers.   Ultimately, I think I prefer the music itself much more than the surround mix, so there's probably not much of a reason to hunt down a copy of this recalled DualDisc unless you're one who needs to have everything and all that The Donnas have ever done.  Or perhaps, you'll want it if you find the bonus material interesting?  For instance, there is a music video for the song "Fall Behind Me" which, thankfully, is presented in 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound.  Even better, though, is that the video also has unicorns and rainbows.  You can't beat that!
