Deep Purple - "Machine Head" SACD (Kazaamies = 4-1/2 of 5)
Technically a European release the Super Audio CD version of "Machine Head" is still fairly easy to find, at least when shopping on the Internet. However, it appears to be somewhat expensive no matter where you buy it. But if you like the band and surround sound, then it might be worth the price. The general consensus around various Internet chat rooms is that the SACD, which is rumored to contain the original 1970s quadraphonic mix, is superior to the earlier DVD-Audio release. The DVD-Audio had a brand new 5.1 surround mix created for its release, so it differs from the SACD. I haven't heard the actual DVD-A, so I can't compare. However, I will agree that the SACD version of "Machine Head" is pretty darn good. It does sound a bit "quad" in the sense that guitars are often placed into the surrounds. Sometimes I don't like that technique, but here it sounds decent enough. Overall, I am quite happy with my purchase. |
