Dave Brubeck
The Dave Brubeck Quartet - "Time Out"   SACD  (Kazaamies = 1-1/2 of 5)

Don't get this disc thinking you're going to hear "Take Five" in amazing surround sound.  Frankly, I don't think it's 5.1 as I can't hear anything in the rear surrounds.  Instead, I think what they've done is a 3-channel mix---with Brubeck in, say, the center channel, and the other two musicians locked into either of the left or right channels.   So it's still a multi-channel music release, but not surround sound.

This 3-channel mix might be interesting for a change of pace or, perhaps, for those looking to get better isolation of each instrumental track.  However, it is my opinion, that the stereo mix actually sounds better than the multi-channel mix.  The stereo mix feels much fuller and has a wider soundstage.  Moreover, the recording is old enough that I doubt there is much to be gained over the existing CD version of "Time Out".  Though, I suppose, the addition of high-resolution to this great music can't hurt.

Note:  The SACD of "Time Out" originally was released as stereo-only.  Then it was later released with an added multi-channel mix.  It is still just a single layer, though, so you'd have to play it on a SACD player.  There is no CD layer.
