Barenaked Ladies
     Barenaked Ladies - "Everything to Everyone"  DVD-Audio   (Kazaamies = 4 of 5)

4 Kazaamies out of 5 total.  Easily.

For $20.00 you get a CD+DVD package that contains two discs.  Bonus extras include loosely performed acoustic tracks of the album songs available in 'audio only' or 'audio only plus video playing'.  The 'audio only' is at 44.1 kHz 16-bit PCM, but becomes Dolby Digital 2.0 when watching the same performance with video.  There are also a few video-camera moments of the band taken whilst recording the album, too.

Those are nice extras, but of course the main reason for buying these discs is the wonderful surround mix found on the DVD-Audio version of the album.  The audio here is recorded at 96 kHz / 24-bit.  Vocals tend to stay primarily in the main left/right channels.  Surrounds are used to make the sound feel bigger overall.  I wouldn't say the mix is exactly natural ambience, but it is used wisely in how distrete it gets.  Often the surrounds echo the mains, but sometimes they contain direct information such as the oddly placed one-line vocal or light instrumentation that is independent of the mains.

I've started to appreciate this album more after repeated listenings.  My favorite songs are "Celebrity", "War on Drugs", "Aluminum", and "Maybe Katie".  It is definitely enjoyable and worthy of recommendation to those interested in hearing one of the more-or-less recent rock acts on high-resolution DVD-Audio.

Let's put it this way:  Would I buy this disc again?  Yes, I would.
