| It Was a Good Run, "Dr. Geoff"! Longtime video editor, Geoffrey Morrison, who in recent months had instituted a Q&A column entitled "Ask Dr. Geoff*", no longer works for Home Theater magazine. With the arrival of the May issue, we get confirmation of what many suspected after an April issue that featured a new Editor-In-Chief and lacked any meaningful contribution by Morrison, who at the time was still listed as a member of the staff. I certainly wish Mr. Morrison the absolute best with whatever his new endeavors will be. Moreover, I'll miss his brutal honesty when it comes to equipment reviews. Always entertaining and never one to pander to special interests, I looked forward to comments such as, and I paraphrase, "I personally wouldn't pick any of the televisions reviewed in this shootout. But if I don't try and, at minimum, pick the least offensive one as the winner, then Maureen will kick my ass." And, despite this crassness, it's not like he comes across as a stuck-up, elitist videophile snob who only considers the highest priced models with the latest wiz-bang features for recommendation. Quite the opposite, seeing as how he mentioned numerous times that saving money by purchasing a quality 720p set is often a better move than spending more for a glitchy 1080p set, never once failing to mention the fact many folks are sitting too far back to discern the additional detail, anyway. The magazine just won't be the same without Geoff. To me he was the face and attitude of Home Theater. And to those of us out there who are now suffering withdrawal, here's what I'd prescribe if I had my own column, say something along the lines of "Ask Dr. Kazaam*". I'd suggest we all get down on our hands and knees and literally beg Mr. Morrison to go to work for another magazine, such as Sound & Vision, so that we may continue to be enlightened, delighted, and amazed! *Note: Neither of Mssrs. Geoffrey or Kazaam are actual doctors (Readers of "Dr. Geoff" may recognize the homage?) ---Kazaam UPDATE: I've been informed that Geoffrey Morrison has already become the Editor-In-Chief of "Home Entertainment" magazine. Congratulations! |
