The Black Crowes - "Freak 'N' Roll... Into The Fog" (DVD-Video) Video = 5 of 5 Audio = 5 of 5
This 2005 performance at San Francisco's Fillmore is highly energetic and entertaining.
The 16x9 anamorphic widescreen picture is top-notch and the DTS surround mix
adds the perfect amount of ambience. Missing from this hard-rocking set is the song, "Twice As Hard", but many of the band's other hits are included as well as many other excellent songs. Personally, I'm a casual fan of the Black Crowes. I've only got a greatest hits album of theirs and a Chris Robinson solo album. As such, I didn't recognize most of the material on this disc. However, it doesn't take long to fall in love with it. The band is visually lively, especially Chris who, as the singer, is able move about the stage somewhat more than the other members since he isn't tied down by heavy instruments. Background colors on the stage frequently change colors to the beat of the music. And the camera work tends to capture all the important stuff and I feel it lets does about as good of a job recreating the concert experience on DVD as is possible. The video changes scenes just often enough to keep things interesting. Yet it never gets dizzy from too much editing. My only complaint is that ocassionally this DVD shows some grainy, home video styled footage of the band walking around the woods or goofing off. This happens while the band is still playing music live on stage. And, sometimes, I wish I'd be able to watch the band making music instead. At least, it can be argued, that the inclusion of the fuzzy home-made films serve to make the video of the stage performance look even more colorful and detailed. This is a fine video disc and I highly recommend it.
