The Beach Boys
   The Beach Boys - "Pet Sounds" DVD-Audio (Kazaamies = 4 of 5)

I think this disc sounds pretty good regardless of which tracklist you decide to listen to here:  mono, stereo, or multichannel.  There does seem to be a certain charm to the stereo mix since everything sounds so nice and tight.  The surround mix is, perhaps, even more enjoyable.  The sound is extremely enveloping and gives some songs a 'trippier' feel to them that somehow seems absent from the stereo tracks.  On my system, I needed to lower the surround levels quite a bit so that they didn't overtake the mains.  Of course, every system is different.  Also, from what I can tell, the center channel speaker is silent most of the time.  I'm fine with that since it means there is virtually no chance of accidently overusing it for vocals, which is one of my pet peeves regarding mutlichannel mixes.  In the end, "Pet Sounds" on DVD-Audio is a great album!

Note:  If looking to purchase this album on DVD-Audio, be extra careful.  The DVD-Audio comes in an elongated plastic jewel box, like most DVD-Audio releases, and contains just the 1 disc.  However, there are also a a couple of special 40th Anniversary deluxe editions out there (CD+DVD package) that lack the high-resolution DVD-Audio and only utilze Dolby Digital for the surround mix.  One comes in a fuzzy package and the other comes in a standard jewel case.
