B.B. King - "Reflections" SACD (Kazaamies = 3-1/2 of 5)
I'll be honest. I don't particulary like this album since it features King's vocals far too prominently for my tastes. Beyond that, though, this single-layer SACD does have some upside. The songs are all covers of "R&B and pop standards" such as the Sam Cooke classic "(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons" or "Always On My Mind" which was popularized by Willie Nelson. I enjoy many of these songs, but I'll suggest that these renditions just don't focus enough on guitar considering this is a B.B. King album. However, there are wonderful-sounding organs---Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer, and Hammond B3---that are a constant throughout the album. The surround mix is moderately aggressive, but still quite enjoyable. So it's defintely not a bad disc. It's just that I'd have much rather seen something where Mr. King makes "Lucile" sing the blues. |
