On February 14th - 17th, 2008, two members of Native Youth Movement (Secwepemc & St'at'imc) took part in a speaking conference against corporations destroying natural eco systems for the means of financial gain, despite clear opposition of locals, and traditional land users. The Conference took place in the everglades, in the wetlands that surround Lake Worth, Palm beach County, Florida. They were invited by a group called Earth First to discuss opposition strategies to the proposed natural gas plant in Palm Beach and the 2010 Winter Olympics in un-ceded "Whistler" to gain awareness from all people around the globe.
On Saturday, NYM shared a panel for the Indigenous Peoples Environmental Struggle. There were workshops facilitated towards our role as humans in protecting our habitat in effective ways including direct action and campaigning. Networking was also an important part of this event. There were groups from South America, southern California and Eastern "USA" all doing their part to create awareness of the wrong doings of corrupt government systems in their area failing all life forms; water, animals, humans and Mother Earth.
In Ecuador, the oil Industries are killing many life forms, that include men, women children, and the natural environment surrounding them. Oil is being dumped in to rivers, and on land, thus causing sever malnourishment and deformation for people and animals forced to eat, and drink anywhere near by. From 1970 until 1992, the US corporation dumped in excess of 18.5 billion gallons of acutely toxic "water of formation" into more than 650 open and unlined pits, as well as directly into the swamps, streams and rivers that make up the Amazon rainforest of northern Ecuador. "Water of formation" contains some of the most dangerous known chemicals, including benzene, toluene, and Policyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs). The result has been what experts believe to be the worst case of oil pollution on the planet and, after Chernobyl, possibly the second-worst environmental catastrophe in human history.Such issues need urgent assistance and financial support to stop such disgusting actions done by these greedy oil industries! Do not look away as people, animals, and Mother Earth are deliberately killed off day by day. NYM sent the message that we fully support these causes and call for a boycott of any and all oil companies destroying human life! Down with Shell and Texaco! NYM's panel stated clear opposition towards the development for the Olympics that destroys ancient traditional territories of coastal and interior Nations during the money/land grab taking place in "B.C. Canada." Statements were made against investors, developers and tourists before, during or after the 2010 Olympics in Un-surrendered native land. All life is Sacred, and we must defend it by any means necessary, through direct action and our daily actions.
The panel group was accompanied by a local elder who has claimed his traditional land and spoke to the people about honouring Mother Earth, and taking our place in life as protectors of this Native Land.
