MLA's office attacked again

Despite his critics, Victoria MLA Jeff Bray can't be shattered -- or at least his office can't.

After a brick was hurled through his 1084 Fort St. constituency office Tuesday -- splintering the glass-door front and sending shards everywhere -- Bray decided to replace the thrice-battered entrance with shatterproof glass.

"It's more expensive but it won't shatter," said Bray. The office was closed Tuesday, but Bray is concerned that if the office is vandalized again, his staff may be harmed.

A man known to police was arrested after the window at Bray's office and another at the Telus Enterprise Solutions store at 852 Fort St. were broken.

"He has a history of mischief related to mental health issues," said Victoria police Sgt. Bill Trudeau.

The last time, Bray's door was broken when a crazed man tossed a brick at the office while cycling down the street.

In April 2002, a sit-in at the MLA's office proved so volatile Victoria police fired pepper spray at demonstrators after officers clad in riot gear broke down the door to arrest 12 masked women who had occupied it.

The women had been protesting provincial government policies such as cuts in welfare payments.

Bray said Wednesday that he will not move his office. It is central to the riding and close to bus lines.

"It would just make it harder for constituents who don't drive," he said.

"And my staff made it very clear they don't want to work in an office that is locked, so we will continue to have open-door policy."
