| Red Faction 2, cont. | |||
| There is a lot of customization in the multiplayer area of the game. I mentioned the huge amount of maps, but did you know that you can make your own bot and customize him? Its true. Red Faction 2 offers plenty of tweaking options for your players. Dont like all of the cheap deaths from the rail gun? Then remove it from the game! You can always choose which weapons you would like for your game, and which ones that would be better off taken out. And you can increase the priority of each weapon, so if your favorite weapon is the dual Uzis, then increase the priority and they can be yours! Truly ingenious. Still, we could have benefited from more destruction, and I still cannot ignore the fact that the vehicles are still not in multiplayer. That really disappoints me. Oh, there are plenty of unlockable features. As you progress farther into single player, it gets deeper and deeper. You start unlocking behind the scenes DVD features, some concept art, a gallery full of pictures, and all of the CGs that take place in the game. Basically, once you have watched one of the CGs, it is recorded and placed into your unlocked area of the game. Of course, you start to unlock all of those multiplayer maps as you progress, because Volitions not going to give you 40 maps for nothing! You have to work for it! In the end, I cannot say that Red Faction 2 is a bad game. It is, in fact, a great game. But it is not the smashing success of the first game. I know, I have compared Red Faction 2 to its predecessor at least twenty times now, and I apologize. But I have to. It just feels like the next step in the series, and when it turns out that it is disappointing, I am saddened by it all. Dont let that fool you though, Red Faction 2 makes an excellent rental. The story is a bit short, so dont buy this until the price goes down another ten dollars or so. If youre the type of gamer who likes to replay through games frequently, you can add another whole point to my score, making it an 8.8. Volition has let me down a bit, but I can understand where they went wrong. They were simply focusing on developing a plot, sort of like what happened in The Empire Strikes Back. I really hope that the Faction is not over, I really want there to be another game in this series. And hopefully well get to experience the same freedom that we felt the first time we popped Red Faction into our PS2s. Chris Currey Graphics: 9Beautiful worlds, excellent texture work and some damn fine textures. The character models are excellent, and the framerate holds up surprisingly well. It gets a little bit too dark though in some spots of the game. Sound: 7The weapons all sound wonderful, but the voice acting is disgusting. The phrases are unnatural and are trying too hard. Of course, that is the work of the godawful script. I dont blame those voice actors at all. Nice music and atmospheric sounds as well. Gameplay: 8Still a fun shooter at heart. It may not have the same amount of Geo-Mod at the first one, but what it does have is a fun shoot-em-up. Its a lot more arcadey than Red Faction was, for better or worse. Value: 8Sure, it takes about seven hours to finish the story, but its a very fun seven hours! The unlockables will keep you playing until the end of it. Multiplayer mode mayhem could last you months. Reviewers Tilt: 9I dont care, its Red Faction. Its fun, its flawed, but I love playing it. It has some problems, and if it werent for these significant flaws, you would have seen an extremely high score. Overall: 7.8 |
