Old school first person shooters never die, they just...uh...disappear

I'm going to be honest with you here. I know that it sounds strange, but I bought my PlayStation back in 1996 just for this game. Sure, there were other games out there... Resident Evil, Jet Moto, Tomb Raider...but I was interested in this. As you may know, I'm a huge fan of the Alien films. So for the whole entire year, here I was playing this game. I played it, replayed it, and played it some more. There are loads of levels in the game, and I wanted to see them all. The atmosphere was inviting yet deadly, which perfectly matches the movies. The monsters actually have a pretty good AI for 1996, and they are deadlier than you can imagine.

It's just too bad that this game is overlooked. I know for a fact that over half of you haven't even seen the game, let alone played it. You're missing out. Okay, so the Doom-like graphics are laughable now, this was state of the art back then. And if you use the texture smoothing option on your PS2, you can make the graphics half way tolerable. If you can find this game now, which you probably can't...I recommend getting it. It's a terrific old-school experience with gameplay that is still potent.

It was my first game. You should see the case. It's in the PS1 long box, not a jewel case. It's sick. I hate those old cases for the games...the instruction manuals are bigger than PS2 games'.

The gameplay is pretty fricking awesome, but not amazing. It's plagued with some issues. First of all, going up lifts is a real pain. You have to press a button to activate a lift that is in the next room...so basically you are running for your life to hope that it doesn't activate before you get there. Wouldn't a simple button right on the lift be more appropriate? Also, you can't look up or down...just like Doom. This is a real pain in the ass, considering that
half the time you are forced to fire 100 shots into an alien's crotch. Also, facehuggers are impossible to hit when they're underneath your feet, you have to jump back (oh that's right, you can't jump) and hope not to get...uh, hugged.

But thanks to the funner levels where you get to shoot company men, the gameplay is saved. Even to this day it's still fun popping a grenade at a guy and watching his body turn into a spray of blood. Speaking of blood, there's quite a bit of it in this game. Whether it's alien blood or human blood, you got a lot of it. It's nowhere near as gory as Resident Evil, but you get the picture. The game becomes a bloody war later in the game, which is a nice little touch up. The final boss fight never disappoints, even though you have to fight it 3 times...one for each ending of each level/movie.

The sounds are perfect for this time of game, and they feel like they were ripped straight out of the movie. Everything from the aliens hiding in the dark and hissing to the facehugger latching on your face...it's all there, wrapped in gift wrap. This kind of thing is a blessing when you're a fan like I am.

This game is just the thing that can hook people to FPS games. This was my first FPS game, and I've been playing them ever since. First person shooters are my favorite genre, and Alien Trilogy was my start of becoming a first person shooter veteran. This game is big fun. The gameplay may be somewhat flawed, but it won't disappoint.
