| "Here's a sad and sorry tale . . ." By Declan Garrett Here's a sad & sorry tale About a pink-and-yellow whale Who didn't know the time of day And wasn't allowed out to play. He got a part-time paper-round Along the shores of Plymouth Sound Then saved up all his hard-earned pay To have his skin dyed hump-back grey. His parents and their friends all laughed "You can't do that so don't be daft". His friend the crab had oft retorted "If you persist you'll be reported!" The little whale was not dismayed And scrimped and saved and worked and slaved Until there came the magic day- The fisherman would turn him grey! "Swim over here kid, and I'll bet That if you go into my net Your skin will turn all-over grey" The mottled mammal thought "Hooray!" But we are made of sterner stuff And would have recognised the bluff Yet whaley in his vanity Seemed to have lost his sanity. The fisherman apologised And told the whale he'd really lied. "I can't make you grey" he said "But don't you worry, you'll be dead." And so the little whale expired The skin he'd never much admired Is rotting on the beach today... The smell may be bad but the bugger's turned grey! *** "Hickory Dickory Dock" By Declan Garrett Hickory Dickory Dock Two mice ran up the clock The clock struck one And the other got away with minor injuries. *** "Hickory Dickory Dock" By Declan Garrett Hickory Dickory Dock The Cat and the Fiddle The Cow jumped over the Moon The little Dog laughed To see such fun As the Cow burned up on Re-entry. |
