FEMINISM, SEX-SELECTIVE ABORTION AND FEMALE FETICIDE

Sex-selective abortion is the practice of aborting that the fetus is an undesired sex, typically female. Sex-selective abortion was rare before the late 20th century because of the difficulty of determining the sex of the fetus before birth. It is believed to be responsible for at least part of the skewed birth statistics in favor of males in Mainland China, India, Taiwan, and South Korea. Although the practice is often illegal, laws against it are extremely difficult to enforce because there is no practical way to determine the parents' true motivation for seeking an abortion.

In the worst-case scenario, the issues and expenses related to dowry make a daughter an undesirable addition to her family, which sometimes leads to female infanticide and sex-selective abortion. In 2000, the United Nations Population Fund reported that female infanticide in India had increased dramatically over the last decade. The infant mortality rate for female babies was 40 percent higher than that of male babies. While poverty was cited as the main reason, dowry was listed as second.

It is common for unsavory medical practitioners to highlight in their advertisements that the US$122 paid now to abort a female fetus is cheaper than to spend $3,500 to $4,000 later on her dowry. This leaves little doubt about the calculations made by parents in their decision to abort a female fetus.

Some women are driven to commit suicide when they realize that their parents cannot pay for a dowry, making their prospects for marriage slim. They are unable to face the social stigma against unmarried women in Indian society. However, the most heinous forms of dowry abuse often occur after a women is married and has moved into her husband's or in-laws' house as is customary in many parts of India. If the groom and his family find that dowry was not paid in full or believe it to be insufficient, they may take out their anger and frustration on the bride. In worst-case scenarios, the groom and his family may demand more dowry.

Outlawed in 1994, sex-determination tests the use of ultrasound technology to determine if pregnant women are carrying a male or female fetus- continue to be carried out by itinerant doctors using compact machines, who travel from clinic to clinic. Over the last decade, the fall in the ratio of girls to boys has been greatest in the richest states of the north and west. In the Punjab the ratio is 793 girls to 1000 boys, down from 875. In Gujurat, the figure is now 878 girls to 1000 boys, compared to 928 girls ten years ago. Women pay about 500 rupees (US$11) for ultrasound tests and 2000 rupees (US$44) for an abortion. Sons are desired to carry on the family name, inherit ancestral property, care for parents in old age and light their father's funeral pyres. Various groups campaign against sex-selective abortions but the 1994 law is weak, with prosecutions for those undergoing sex-determination tests, unlikely. In some areas within India ultrasound tests are openly advertised.

The rate of abortion of female fetuses in India has actually created a shortage of females in some areas. Women's rights activists, typically pro-abortion, are outraged that their own ranks are being systematically thinned by the practice. "We believe in a woman's right to choose," said an unnamed spokeswoman, "But we also believe in fairness. Therefore, women should abort boys at least as frequently as girls, if not more often, since women are oppressed."

China currently has an "excess" of ~40,000,000 guang guan (literally "bare branches", single men with no potential marriage partners) due to widescale selective abortion and female child infanticide. Now that India is facing a similar problem.

Actually, women's groups in India (including some who work for Planned Parenthood International) are often activists against abortion, using the term "female foeticide" to protest the anti-woman nature of a primarily anti-girl-baby abortion industry.

There is a strong imbalance in sex ratios in China as well as South Korea, India, and Taiwan, probably the result of sex-selective abortion. Son preference is common in China. China calls the son preference situation the "missing girl" problem. Parents may wish for a male child because in many cultures only a male will carry on the family name, because they believe that a male is needed for work, or because they wish a male to earn an income needed to support the parents in their old age. In response to sex-selective abortions, Mainland China has made it illegal for a physician to reveal the sex of a fetus.

Gender detection has been a booming business in India.

Gender-selective abortion may make it more difficult for a generation to seek heterosexual romantic relationships. That happens years from the times of abortion after the children have grown up. Chinese men may likely find it difficult to find themselves wives.

ABORTION AND GENOCIDE

ABORTION is doubtless the greater genocide of all times: 50 million assassinated children every year in the world, 3 million in the United States. The reality of life is pure genetics: ever since the ovum and the spermatozoon are united exists life (the genetics demonstrates it). If we killed to children not been born that suffers some subnormality, to that they are product of a violation and to which they suppose " an excessive load for his mothers " because we also did not kill to all the been born children who are poor, the retarded ones, to the black, the homosexuals, the proabortionists, all the one that is not Aryan, to that do to us bad, etc. This is the hard mechanics of the abortion: if we justified the crime, we are putting ourselves on the brink of madness what passed in Nazi Germany with the extermination of the Jews and other races. The human life is a value that is over any other ideological consideration.

Miguel Delibes wrote in 1986 on the principles of this false " progressism " that he has betrayed to the defense of the weakest and nonviolence:

" and the case is that the abortism has come to include itself in the postulates of " progressive " modernity. In our time a progressive antiabortionist is almost inconceivable. For these, all one that is against the free abortion is a reactionary, position that, as usually it is said, leaves much people, socially outpost, with the ass to the air. Long ago the progressism responded to a very simple scheme: to support to the weak one, pacifism and nonviolence. Years later the progressive added to this creed the defense of the nature. But the problem arose from the abortion and, before him, the progresism vacillated. For the progressive, the weak one was the worker, as opposed to boss, the boy in front of the adult, the black in front of the white. It was necessary to take party by them. For the progressive, they were recusables the war, the nuclear energy, the capital punishment, any form of violence. Consequently, it was necessary to be against to the arms race, the atomic weapons and dead penalty. The progressive ideary was clear and turned out quite suggestive to follow it. The life was first, which came was to try to improve its quality for dispossessed and defenseless you. It had, then, task ahead. But the problem from the abortion, the abortion in chain arose, it frees, and with him the controversy on if the fetus were or nonperson, and, before him, the progressism vacillated. The embryo was life, yes, but nonperson, whereas the presumed mother was it already and with decision capacity. Perhaps the embryo did not think that the life of the fetus was more unprotected than the one of the worker or the one of the black, because lacked voice and vote, and politically was irrelevant. Then one began to yield in principles that seemed immutable: the nonviolence and protection weak. Against the embryo, a life abandoned and inner to me, could be attempted with impunity. Nothing concerned its weakness if its elimination took place by means of a painless violence, scientific and sterilized. Because if the progressism is not to defend the life, smallest and needy, against the social aggression... what I do here? Because for these progressives who still defend to the defenseless ones and reject any form of violence, that is to say, they continue accepting the old principles, nausea also takes place before an atomic burst, a nazi gas chamber or a sterilized operating room."

GOD'S TRUTH ABOUT ABORTION

You shall not kill. (54)

You have heard that it was said to the men of old, 'You shall not kill: and whoever kills shall be liable to judgement.' But I say to you that every one who is angry with his brother shall be liable to judgement. (55)

2258 'Human life is sacred because from its beginning it involves the creative action of God and it remains for ever in a special relationship with the Creator, who is its sole end. God alone is the Lord of life from its beginning until its end: no one can under any circumstance claim for himself the right directly to destroy an innocent human being.' (56)

1. Respect for Human Life

The witness of sacred history

2259 In the account of Abel's murder by his brother Cain, (57) Scripture reveals the presence of anger and envy in man, consequences of original sin, from the beginning of human history. Man has become the enemy of his fellow man. God declares the wickedness of this fratricide: 'What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying to me from the ground. And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.' (58)

2260 The covenant between God and mankind is interwoven with reminders of God's gift of human life and man's murderous violence:

For your lifeblood I will surely require a reckoning... Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for God made man in his own image. (59)

The Old Testament always considered blood a sacred sign of life. (60) This teaching remains necessary for all time.

2261 Scripture specifies the prohibition contained in the fifth commandment: 'Do not slay the innocent and the righteous.' (61) The deliberate murder of an innocent person is gravely contrary to the dignity of the human being, to the golden rule and to the holiness of the Creator. The law forbidding it is universally valid: it obliges each and everyone, always and everywhere.

2262 In the Sermon on the Mount, the Lord recalls the commandment, 'You shall not kill' (62) and adds to it the proscription of anger, hatred and vengeance. Going further, Christ asks his disciples to turn the other cheek, to love their enemies. (63) He did not defend himself and told Peter to leave his sword in its sheath.(64)

Intentional homicide

2268 The fifth commandment forbids direct and intentional killing as gravely sinful. The murderer and those who co-operate voluntarily in murder commit a sin that cries out to heaven for vengeance. (68)

Infanticide, (69) fratricide, parricide and the murder of a spouse are especially grave crimes by reason of the natural bonds which they break. Concern for eugenics or public health cannot justify any murder, even if commanded by public authority.

2269 The fifth commandment forbids doing anything with the intention of indirectly bringing about a person's death. The moral law prohibits exposing someone to mortal danger without grave reason, as well as refusing assistance to a person in danger.

The acceptance by human society of murderous famines, without efforts to remedy them, is a scandalous injustice and a grave offence. Those whose usurious and avaricious dealings lead to the hunger and death of their brethren in the human family indirectly commit homicide, which is imputable to them .(70)

Unintentional killing is not morally imputable. But one is not exonerated from grave offence if, without proportionate reasons, one has acted in a way that brings about someone's death, even without the intention to do so.

Abortion

2270 Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person -- among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life.(71)

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you. (72)

My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately wrought in the depths of the earth .(73)

2271 Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law:

You shall not kill the embryo by abortion and shall not cause the newborn to perish .(74)

God, the Lord of life, has entrusted to men the noble mission of safeguarding life, and men must carry it out in a manner worthy of themselves. Life must be protected with the utmost care from the moment of conception: abortion and infanticide are abominable crimes.(75)

2272 Formal co-operation in an abortion constitutes a grave offence. The Church attaches the canonical penalty of excommunication to this crime against human life. 'A person who procures a completed abortion incurs excommunication latae sententiae' (76) 'by the very commission of the offence', (77) and subject to the conditions provided by Canon Law . (78) The Church does not thereby intend to restrict the scope of mercy. Rather, she makes clear the gravity of the crime committed, the irreparable harm done to the innocent who is put to death, as well as to the parents and the whole of society.

2273 The inalienable right to life of every innocent human individual is a constitutive element of a civil society and its legislation:

'The inalienable rights of the person must be recognized and respected by civil society and the political authority. These human rights depend neither on single individuals nor on parents; nor do they represent a concession made by society and the state; they belong to human nature and are inherent in the person by virtue of the creative act from which the person took his origin. Among such fundamental rights one should mention in this regard every human being's right to life and physical integrity from the moment of conception until death.'(79)

'The moment a positive law deprives a category of human beings of the protection which civil legislation ought to accord them, the state is denying the equality of all before the law. When the state does not place its power at the service of the rights of each citizen, and in particular of the more vulnerable, the very foundations of a state based on law are undermined. . . As a consequence of the respect and protection which must be ensured for the unborn child from the moment of conception, the law must provide appropriate penal sanctions for every deliberate violation of the child's rights.' (80)

2274 Since it must be treated from conception as a person, the embryo must be defended in its integrity, cared for, and healed, as far as possible, like any other human being.

Prenatal diagnosis is morally licit, 'if it respects the life and integrity of the embryo and the human foetus and is directed toward its safeguarding or healing as an individual... It is gravely opposed to the moral law when this is done with the thought of possibly inducing an abortion, depending upon the results: a diagnosis must not be the equivalent of a death sentence.' (81)

2275 'One must hold as licit procedures carried out on the human embryo which respect the life and integrity of the embryo and do not involve disproportionate risks for it, but are directed toward its healing, the improvement of its condition of health, or its individual survival.' (82)

'It is immoral to produce human embryos intended for exploitation as disposable biological material.' (83)

'Certain attempts to influence chromosomic or genetic inheritance are not therapeutic but are aimed at producing human beings selected according to sex or other predetermined qualities. Such manipulations are contrary to the personal dignity of the human being and his integrity and identity' (84) which are unique and unrepeatable.
