Cyclops (6)

Dirk Pitt resides in an old metal aircraft hangar built in 1936 as a maintenance hanger on the edge of Washington National/International Airport a.k.a. Ronald Reagan International.

Dragon (26)
Shock Wave (27)
Atlantis Found (12)
  • Built in 1937.
  • Flood Tide (24)
  • The hangar was condemned and scheduled for demolition in 1980. Pitt decided to purchase the structure and talked the local heritage preservation committee into having it placed on the National Register of Historic Landmarks. He then remodeled former upstairs offices into an apartment and restored hangar to its original condition.

    Inca Gold (25)

The hangar appears to be a deserted on the outside.

    Shock Wave (27)

A code punched into remote transmitter Pitt carries activates the hangar door to lift.

    Deep Six (23)
    Shock Wave (27)

Pitt whistles the first few bars of 'Yankee Doodle" into a small receiver mounted on a post by the hangar. Sound recognition software electronically shuts down the security system and opens the big drive-through door.

    Inca Gold (25)

A security camera is mounted at the side door entrance.

    Dragon (26)

A pocket transmitter is used to turn off the alarm system at the side door and a code entered into the transmitter turns on the interior lights.

    Treasure (23)

Pitt whistles the first few bars of 'Yankee Doodle" into a small remote transmitter. The sound recognition signal electronically shuts down the security system and unlocks the side door that looks as if it was last opened in 1945.

    Flood Tide (24)

A security chime is activated when someone tries to enter the hanger (TV monitoring system in the study).

    Dragon (26)

A video camera is also mounted across the road on a top of the telephone pole.

    Dragon (35)

Despite the security measures, the hangar has been penetrated/attacked upon occasion:

  • Dirk Pitt comes home to find Sal Casio is sitting in his favorite chair in the living room.
  • Deep Six (23)

  • Ray Jordan forces entry into the hangar while Dirt Pitt is working on his Stutz.
  • Dragon (35)

  • Two of Shang's men are waiting for Dirk Pitt in the hangar.
  • Flood Tide (24)

  • Two missiles are fired into the hangar.
  • Atlantis Found (12)

The ground floor of the hanger houses his classic automobile/aircraft collection and acquired souvenirs.

    Shock wave (27)

Overhead fluorescent lights illuminate the interior.

    Vixen 03 (50)

The walls are painted white and the concrete floor is polished.

    Deep Six (22)

Vintage signs hand from the high arched ceiling, including the Burma Shave signs.

    Atlantis Found (12)

A row of windows run beneath the huge curved roof.

    Cyclops (9)

There are skylights in the curved roof.

    Deep Six (22)

His living quarters stretch across an upper level against the far wall. The apartment is enclosed in glass.

    Vixen 03 (50)

The apartment is accessed in one of two ways:

  • An ornate iron spiral staircase.
  • Deep Six (22)

  • A freight elevator.
  • Shock Wave (27)
    Valhalla Rising (15)

The staircase and elevator lead up to a wrought iron balcony.

    Shock Wave (15)
    Atlantis Found (12)

The front door opens into a living room flanked by a large bedroom and study on one side and a dining area and kitchen on the other.

    Treasure (23)

The living room, study, single bedroom with a bathroom, and kitchen/dining room measure eleven hundred square feet.

    Atlantis Found (12)

The apartment looks like a nautical museum.

    Shock Wave (27)

The hangar apartment floor comes from the teak deck of a steamship that ran aground off the island of Kouai in Hawaii.

    Trojan Odyssey (41)

The living room-study is filled with shelves stacked with books about the sea and glass enclosed models of ships Pitt had discovered and surveyed while working for NUMA.

    Shock Wave (27)

Two walls are filled with shelves with ship models of wrecks. The remaining walls held dockyard builders' half models and four seascape paintings by Richard DeRosset, a contemporary American artist, of nineteenth century steamships.

    Flood Tide (28)

A door on one side of the room leads into a large bedroom, decorated like the captain's cabin of an old sailing ship, complete with a huge wheel as a backboard for the bed.

    Shock Wave (27)
    Flood Tide (28)

A king-size bed sits in middle of the room, with mahogany- paneled walls, a wood plank floor and a small fireplace. The furnishings, including the dressers and cabinets, are nautical antiques.

    Flood Tide (28)

Has an antique mirror that came from the first class stateroom of an old steamer.

    Trojan Odyssey (48)

A bathroom is off the bedroom. The brass plumbing fixtures in the bathroom and kitchen seem to have come out of some old passenger liner.

  • Has a teakwood shower.
  • Flood Tide (28)
  • Trojan Odyssey (41)
  • The opposite end of the living room opens into a kitchen and dining area.

    Shock Wave (27)

Has a glass case of trophies in the kitchen. Most are for outstanding automobiles at concours shows. A few are old high school and Air Force Academy trophies. And there are two trophies for fencing. He still works out from time to time with the saber.

    Dragon (35)

There is an antique credenza and a table built from a cabin roof off a nineteenth-century sailing ship in the dining room.
